Pet loss quotes

Pet loss quotes: short words for a dog or cat you miss

Short words are often the ones that stay: on a card, a stone, a collar tag or a portrait. Here are pet loss quotes and memorial sayings for dogs and cats, words of sympathy for a friend, and two classic quotes.

All of them work in our portraits, where your pet’s photo is drawn with the lines you choose. The shorter the line, the more often it repeats across the picture.

Words of sympathy for the loss of a pet

For a card or a message to someone who lost their dog or cat. Use the pet’s name: it matters more than the words around it.

  • I’m so sorry about [name]. They were lucky to have you.
  • Thinking of you and of [name], who was so loved.
  • [name] had the best life with you. Sending you love.
  • There will never be another [name]. I’m here if you want to talk.
  • Losing a friend like [name] is hard. Take all the time you need.

Two classic quotes about loving an animal

a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.

What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.

How to choose quotes for a portrait

Pick five to fifteen lines and start with the name. Mix one or two longer sentences with short ones: short lines repeat more and give the picture its texture, long ones are the ones people stop to read.

Your own words beat any quote. "You always stole my seat" is funnier, truer and more them than anything on this page. Use the quotes as a starting point.

Questions

What is a short quote for the loss of a pet?

"Gone from our sight, never from our hearts", "Once by my side, forever in my heart" and "Loved every day, missed every day" are short enough for a card, a stone or a tag.

What do you write to someone who lost their pet?

Say the pet’s name and something true: "I’m so sorry about Luna. She was lucky to have you." Offer time and an ear rather than advice.

Can I use these quotes on a memorial?

Yes. The sayings on this page are ours and free to use. The two classic quotes are attributed to Anatole France and Helen Keller and are widely quoted.
